CHAPTER NINE

Essence was alone at the front counter of the shelter, busily clacking away at the computer keys, as usual.

“Morning,” Macy greeted her.

“Hey, girl,” Essence mumbled, clearly intent upon her task. “Sit in Polly’s chair for a sec, I have news.”

“Gotcha. Is everything okay? Is Polly…?”

Macy didn’t even finish her sentence before Essence lifted one finger as a warning for her to be quiet, her eyes still glued to her computer screen.

“My bad, sorry,” Macy whispered, causing Essence to shake her head as she completed whatever she was working on.

Essence tapped away until she finished, then hit one last key with finality, and spun in her chair to face Macy.

“What were you working on, national security?” Macy chuckled.

“I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you,” Essence shot back, examining her nails.

“So, you said you had news,” Macy prompted.

“Yes, I do. My BFF Kenisha has a cousin named Nicco, and he’s like this vocal coach,” Essence began.

“Oh, I don’t need a vocal coach,” Macy protested with a chuckle. “I don’t think there’s any help for me in that regard.”

Essence cocked an eyebrow and stared at her for a beat.

“Do you want to hear the news or not, Ms. Chatterbox?” she asked.

“Oh, I thought that was the news. Go on,” Macy encouraged.

“Anyhow…” Essence gave her a warning glance before she continued. “Nicco is this voice coach—he’s supposed to be pretty good, and pretty expensive—and guess who one of his favorite students is?” Essence smiled like the cat who ate the canary.

“Polly?” Macy guessed, mystified.

Essence rolled her eyes.

“Polly? Really? No, it’s not Polly. It’s your garage sale murder victim lady.” Essence punctuated her sentence with a light clicking of neon pink nails on the desk.

“Oh!” Macy’s eyes went wide.

“And that’s not all.” Essence leaned in, and Macy matched her. “Apparently, they were very … close.”

Macy’s mouth dropped open with a sharp intake of breath. “No way!” she breathed.

“Way.” Essence nodded.

“I wonder if he might be involved in the murder,” Macy thought aloud.

“For Kenisha’s family’s sake, I hope not, but you never know.” Essence pursed her lips.

“Well, at least my own ties to the situation will be done soon. I’ve sold almost all of her jewelry and will be shipping it out after I send it through the ionizer.”

Essence shuddered. “Yes, girl, get that stuff out of your house like yesterday.”

Macy was still thinking about the victim and the voice coach and garage sales in general while she walked a Corgi, a Schnauzer, and a pitiful-looking rat terrier whose huge eyes melted her heart. Leo the Great Dane was nowhere to be found, and she hoped that meant he’d gone for a walk with Polly or Sync.

Polly was back in her chair by the time that Macy returned from walking her furry friends, but she still didn’t see Leo.

“Hey sunshine, how’s it going?” Polly greeted her when she returned to the front.

“Good. Where’s Leo?” Macy asked with a concerned frown.

“Leo was adopted late yesterday.” Polly gave her a sympathetic smile.

“And the new owner was fiiiine!” Essence commented.
